What are they?
There are two major political parties in the United States. These are democratic party and the republican party. They both have different beliefs, values, and symbols. The democrats, also know as liberals, stand for change while the republicans, also know as conservatives, stand for order and wish to “conserve.” The liberal color is blue and their animal is the donkey. The conservative color is red and their animal is the elephant.
What is the purpose of them?
Political parties select candidates and inform the voters. They organize the voting process for votes thus making them more likely to understand and vote.
History of...
The United States Constitution never spoke of political parties. The Founding Fathers originally did not want to be partisan. Past presidents have said political parties may now be the best way to go. George Washington, who wasn't a member of any party, said that they would lead to conflict, and would be bad for the US.

Other Political Parties and Beliefs
There are not only two parties, however none of the other parties have much of a chance of winning an election.
Libertarians believe every man for himself. One should take care and pay for himself/herself and not have to pay taxes except for the military. One should be legally allowed to do anything (drive with no seatbelt, take drugs, etc.) as long as it does not hurt others.

Socialists believe that taxes should be very high (50% or more of income) to support and help the people as a hole. They believe that everyone needs to give money, however, in return get free health care, have new roads, free schools etc.

Trivia About Party Symbols
The donkey and elephants being symbols for parties is thanks to a political cartoonist. The donkey first came about during the election of 1828, however, it was not until Thomas Nast drew these political animals in 1970 that they became associated with the parties.
"In the end, that's what this election is about. Do we participate in a politics of cynicism or a politics of hope?"
~ Barack Obama |
"America cannot continue to lead the family of nations around the world if we suffer the collapse of the family here at home."
~ Mitt Romney |
